  1. I've run my bass through my digitech rp100 (which is the same as the rp50 but with more presets), with no problems.

All the effects work well except the overdrives.  The models with overdrive aren't programed to work with such low notes, so  you get an odd sound.

My favorite to use on my bass is the chorus - smooth and clean.  The flange as well as the auto-yah are fun too.

If you own other pedals for your guitar, try your bass through those as well.

The only time you need to worry about ruining electronics with a bass is with amplifiers: a bass will blow the speakers of most guitar amps/cabnets.

A little advise though:  if you want your bass to sound its best with effects, buy effects meant for the bass.  Roland/Boss makes a huge line of bass effects that include bass synth, distortion, and many others.  Check them out at your local guitar store or Guitar Center.
