Digvijay Singh earns long-sought victory in Panasonic Open India – Golf News
Indian Digvijay Singh earned his first Asian Tour victory after a struggle of 12 years, as he stunned his opponents with a six-under par 66 in the final round of the Panasonic Open India to reach atop the leaderboard.
Singh had a flawless round, as he was never seen struggling to make a par shot. In total, he made six birdies without a single bogey.
His final score was 11-under par for the tournament. His compatriot Gaganjeet Bhullar and Bangladeshi Siddikur Rahman tied for the second place with nine-under par overall scores.
"This is very special for me. There's no feeling better than winning an Asian Tour title in India at the Delhi Golf Club. I've won on the local circuit before but this takes the cake," said Singh, who totalled an 11-under-par 277.
The highlight of Singh’s performance on the final day includes four birdies on the back nine that played a crucial part in his victory.
"The 13th hole was the turning point that got me going. I made my second birdie of the day on hole seven and couldn't convert anything until the birdie on 13. From then on, the birdies starting flowing in," he said.
Singh lost his Asian Tour card last year. This year, he was playing in the tournament on sponsor exemption because of the home country event.
He told that he was not much disheartened after he lost the membership on the Tour. However, it was still frustrating for him not to register a victory in the last 12 years while his friends had some to their names.
Bhullar, who remained on top of the leaderboard for most of the part in the final round, applauded Singh’s late charge to snatch a victory from him.
He said that Singh deserved the victory, especially after such a great finish to the tournament. However, Bhullar said that he could have done better to register his third victory on the Asian Tour.
Rahman, on the other hand, had a superb round except for two bogeys that ruined his chances of forcing the game into playoffs.
He is the only Bangladeshi player to play and record a win on the Asian Tour.
