What is there to do there? My fiancée is going on a cruise and she stops off there. They have a tour of a couple of famous places but what else is there to do?

Also are there any other interesting things there e.g. markets, shops etc. or is there some local products that are very rare here in the UK. I dont really know what I'm looking for but I want to give her some ideas for when she's there.

thanks

  1. Dikili is an attractive small (pop. approx 15,000) town on the Aegean coast. There are beaches, a historic mosque and a weekly street market. You could swim and eat fish but don't expect the choice of entertainment and activities offered by the larger resorts.

The cruise will almost definitely offer a tour of the ancient site of Pergamon (Bergama) which is a short distance away. This is well worth seeing and has an impressive acropolis which boasts the steepest ancient theatre; the asklepion (ancient health centre) and a temple of Serapis or Roman basilica.

Other possible excursions in the area include the Kozak mountains which offer stunning natural beauty and glimpses of traditional village life; the castle at nearby Candarli, and the vernacular architecture of Ayvalik.

Shopping opportunities include olives (including oil, soap etc), carpets (Bergama and Yacibedir are local styles), metalware and leather goods.
