Question:

Dilation and c section bound?

Ok, so I know someone who had to have an emergency c section with their first child due to a complete halt when it came to dilation. So, she is now pregnant (38 weeks) with the 2nd and went to the hospital at 2 centimeters dilated and they told her to come back at 3. She is due to have a c section again, so I thought it was pretty strange. Sound weird to anyone else?

  1. No. If she's not in labor there is no reason to section her before she is scheduled. If she hits 3 cm though, labor is much more likely to start on it's own and they would prefer to section her at that point to avoid her laboring.

  2. It does and doesn't.

Basically, they can't do anything at all when she's only 2cm dialated.  It's just a waiting game.  The hospital has limited amount of delivery rooms and it could takes weeks, days or hours for her dialate more.  She's be more comfortable at home anyway.

If she's scheduled for another c-section, chances are they'll wait for that date, especially if her water hasn't broken.

My sister dialated 2cm when she was only 27weeks along.  She was given a steroid shot to mature the babies lungs and sent home.  She ended up deliverying him at 41 weeks..  She was constantly getting contractions and was uncomfortable, but they did absolutely nothing for her since she was only 2cm, but it worked out because she didn't have him until she was over her full term anyway.

    Good luck!
