I have recently moved to the country and have 10 acres of land. It is a beautiful field of native Texas wildflowers, wild herbs, and lovely grasses. I want to collect and catalogue the different plants and use them for art projects. My husband wants to mow it all down! He says we will have snakes and bugs and coyotes.(hello...country) What should I do?

  1. Tell him you'll compromise. Don't tell him that, to maintain the meadow, it is necessary to mow it once or twice per year. That will maintain the meadow in the subclimax state you love. The mowing cannot be done in the summertime, though, unless you want to kill all the ground-nesting birds. It can be mowed during fall thru early spring. If you don't mow, woody vegetation will start to move in.

  2. Ask him why you moved to the country if you didn't want to have snakes and bugs and coyotes.

There's a place that has already been cleansed of "offensive" critters, it's called the city.

The snakes, bugs, and coyotes not only aren't going to bother you if you don't bother them, but will most likely still come around even if you mow everything down. And because their natural food system and habitat will be destroyed, they will be looking for food and shelter elsewhere, like in your house.

Besides, mowed grass doesn't stay mowed for long. Does he really want to be expending the time and money to keep 10 acres constantly trimmed?

Use your womanly charms to change his mind.

  3. Yeah, partition the land off.  Leave one section normal and chop the rest down.   Why move to the country if you just want a lawn, you could have done that in a city or town.

Snakes, bugs, little critters and big ones like coyotes are normal to the countryside.  If there are coyotes prowling around be careful of small dogs, cats and young children coyotes will eat them!   That's life!

  4. make neat gardern beds and plant the plants within this area to keep it neat, trimmed and free of snakes. My family and I live on 40 acres and we dont see snakes very often. Snakes are just as scared of us as we are of them

  5. I agree with Erin. Make some Gardens and I live in the country as well. (not as much land as you but still in the country) All I can say is don't let him chop it all down. Its  BEAUTIFUL the way it is. You can also try and grow some vegetables or other plants. You may also consider Planting some nice trees that don't require much maintenance.

Have a fun time with those flowers and may you do what you think is right......=)

  6. Keep separate homes.

His is in town. Yours is in the country.
