Dilip Vengsarkar backs Rohit Sharma to come good – Cricket News Update

India’s former chairman of selectors, Dilip Vengsarkar, on Thursday backed under fire Rohit Sharma to come out of his lean patch soon. He however urged the struggling middle-order batsman to prove his potential on the field and get some much needed runs
under his belt to cement his place in the national squad.

"There is no doubt Rohit has tremendous potential but he has to score runs. He has to transform his potential into performance which is not happening," said Vengsarkar, who is known to be a stern supporter of the 25-year-old Mumbai right-hander.

"He is a fine player and there is no question about his abilities but he has failed for too long," the former chief selector added further.

Sharma, the 25-year-old Maharashtra batsman, made his way to international cricket in 2007, and went on to make a name for himself with some dazzling performances in the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 Championship, in South Africa, the same year.

The Mumbai right-hander continued with his good form over the next couple of years. Year 2011 was specifically a booming year for the middle order batsman, which saw him scoring 611 runs at an impressive average of 55.55, including six half centuries. He
also claimed Man of the Series accolades against West Indies, home and away, last year.

However, 2012 has not been a good year for the middle-order batsman as he averages just 13.67 with the bat, from 13 matches. In his last five innings, he fell for single digit scores, 5, 0, 0, 4, 4.

Sharma, a veteran of 85 One Day Internationals, was a complete disappointment in the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka, which the Men in Blue won 4-1, hitting a new low – 13 runs from five matches.

Earlier, India’s opening batsman Gautam Gambhir had also backed the troubled teammate to come out of the slump and start scoring big runs.

“Let's not talk about individuals, let's not put the blame that Rohit is not doing well. Everyone should back him because I see him scoring a lot of runs in the future and he could be one of the great players of Indian cricket," Gambhir had said after Sharma
struggled in the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka.
