Dillon Gee may be out from the season as right shoulder blood clot requires surgery - MLB Update
A problem with artery and blood clot in his shoulder requires Dillon Gee to go through surgery on Friday. As per the reports, this may easily mean that he will not be appearing in the season now.
If this is going to be the case, the New York Mets will be doing some necessary shuffling in their rotation once they come back after the break.
Since Mike Pelfrey, a starting pitcher with the Mets who got injured earlier has not recovered yet, a Minor League prospect Matt Harvey may be called up.
Furthermore, Tommy John surgery that Pelfrey is going through means that he will not be returning in the season. This further strengthens the case of Harvey being brought back from the Minors to the Majors.
However, the management is reluctant and is looking to give him more time before allowing an opportunity in the season.
Meanwhile, the second half of the season imposes a great challenge on the Mets.
Currently, the team is at the third position on the table, preceded by the Atlanta Braves. Claiming the second spot demands consistent performances from their starters in the second half.
While they have services of the likes of R.A. Dickey and Johan Santana, not having a quality fifth starter can become their weak-link.
Such a loophole can wreak a damaging effect on their momentum by the time they begin winning games and are set for building long-winning streaks.
Moving on, the fact upcoming games will be tough in terms of pressure, availability of reliable starters is extremely important for the Mets. The pitchers that can withstand the rough-ups and can come out improved after being put under pressure are needed
by them.
In this respect, absence of Gee is a huge setback. The fact his performance is reasonably better, gives a reason to believe that he was to play a big role in the second half.
Within few days, announcement will be made about the pitcher that will fill the spot on rotation, if there is no sign that Gee can recover in time. It will be interesting to see who is going to earn the call now.
