Dillon Gee’s economical pitching helps New York Mets beat Atlanta Braves 3-2 – MLB Update
New York Mets’ starter Dillon Gee had a reasonable start with the ball as he gave only one run on five hits as the Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-2 at Turner Field, Atlanta on 17
April.
Gee was brought back by the Mets from Triple-A Buffalo just before the start of game and had forgotten his luggage, so he was forced to wear the gloves, spikes and other related gear of his team-mates. Speaking to reporters, Gee said, "Yesterday was a long
day. I was stuck in the airport all day. It's the same game out there, no matter what glove you've got.”
Gee had four brilliant strike-outs in five innings. The Mets’ catcher Josh Thole also played well as he made one run on two hits, including two RBIs. It was a great moment for the Mets to get a win after a long time.
The Mets’ Manager Terry Collins made a slight amendment in the roster as he sent Thole in the opening position from Number eight for his hard-hitting. Thole led off the Mets by taking singles in the first and fifth innings of the game. He had a position
just before the pinch-hitter Jose Reyes who also had two dominating runs on two hits. He smacked consistently in his last 11 starts.
Collins said, “It's our biggest win so far, I can tell you that. The key today was Dillon Gee getting us innings. It's both their days to throw anyway. They were going to throw [in the bullpen] anyway. Believe me, we haven't played up to our capabilities,
but we're a good team."
Collins wanted some improvement in the line-up so he wished to have outfielder Jason Bay in the roster, as he becomes available from the disabled list. He was out of the team due to a rib cage injury that he sustained. There is possibility that Bay will
play against the Houston Astros this Tuesday.
The Braves’ starter Tommy Hanson threw well but not enough to get a victory to his team. He gave just three runs on five hits and had nine strike-outs with two walks in five innings. During the eighth inning, Jason Heyward struck a home run against Jason
Isringhausen.
Chipper Jones played as a pinch-hitter and led off the Braves with a walk in the ninth inning but was struck out. The Mets’ closer Francisco Rodriguez threw in the last inning for his second save. He pitched superbly as he struck out the Braves’ pinch-hitter
Brooks Conrad. In the end, the Mets rebounded after a double-header defeat by the Braves and the Colorado Rockies.
