Dillon Perillo downs Beyrick De Vries to claim Los Cabos Open of Surfing victory – Surfing news
America’s Dillon Perillo won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Los Cabos Open of Surf after getting the better of South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries in the final that went down at Zippers in Los Cabos, Mexico, on Saturday, June 22, 2013.
In order to get his first major ASP Men’s victory, the American surfer displayed some pretty top-notch surfing in the decisive moments of the event, thus leaving absolutely no doubt in the mind of the judges that he was indeed the most deserving of the win.
“I don’t even know what to say,” Perillo said. “Mexico is one of my favorite places in the world. I’ve been coming down here surfing with my Dad since I was a little kid. This was a sick contest. I was so nervous the whole time in the Final. I was just telling
myself to breathe and try and relax.”
Perillo had been on quite a roll since the start of the event. Despite the challenging conditions on offer, he had managed to hold his own while taking on a field full of talent surfers from around the globe.
The American surfer survived a couple of close calls on the final day of the event, the first being in the quarter-final, where he barely edged past Australia’s Garrett Parkes to claim victory, while the second was in his semi-final heat, where he managed
to get just enough points on the score-board in the final minutes of the battle to finish on top of America’s Tanner Gudauskas.
De Vries, on the other hand, made his way into the finals much more convincingly, winning both his quarter-final and semi-final heat by quite a margin against New Zealand’s Richard Christie and Spain’s Vicente Romero respectively.
While the South African surfer was the favourite to walk away with the win prior to the commencement of the final, Perillo chose the right moment to unleash his true potential and go on a rampage.
The American surfer immediately stamped his authority over his rival with a couple of scores in the eight-point range through a series of fore-hand manoeuvres.
Rather than relaxing after such a solid start, Perillo continued to hunt for an even better score and eventually collected a 9.57-point ride to get to a heat-total of 18.24 points.
De Vries found himself staring at the daunting task of beating his rival’s intimidating two-wave total. The task proved too much for him despite a determined search for a couple of big score, as he eventually finished with a heat-total of 13.84 points.
The South African surfer was happy with his runner-up result, stating that he is currently focusing on getting just enough points to make it to the mid-year cut-off in order to get into the Primes for at least half the season.
