What is the standard size or recommended sizes for a round ring?

  1. it depends on what you plan to do with it. if you want a round pen for lounging and groundwork 50 feet is standard... if you want something big enough to ride in 75 to 100 feet is a better option

    **just FYI, round pens don't have dimensions... they have diameters


  2. there are a few dimensions.  usually depending on what you are doing, with a young horse a smaller round pen is better but the standard size for lunge work here in Australia is 20 metres in diametre.  This is the size of the circle work needed in dressage.  Not sure what the conversion would be but there are approx 3 feet to a metre so approx 60 feet diameter.  

    50 feet is fine for young horses (to keep them from being too far away from you) but for ridden work 50 feet a bit small and some horses will have a bit of difficulty with the tight circle but it is not impossible to ride this just a bit harder for the horse.

    For your eventual arena size I would suggest that you build one as big as you can.  A standard dressage arena is 60metres x 20 metres but if you have the space build a bigger arena that way you can always put out cones etc if you want to do dressage.  The bigger the better for an arena.
