Dimitar Berbatov, the striker from Bulgaria, joined Manchester United in 2008 and is playing his third season for the club. However, despite all the hype around his transfer he has been largely a failure for his team. He has failed to inspire and fell short
of the expectations regarding his future at Old Trafford.
However, this season started well for Berbatov, as he turned out to be a blessing in disguise for his team. Manchester United were facing problems with their main striker, Wayne Rooney, so they needed someone to step up and fill the void. Berbatov rose up
to the call of desperation from the fans and his manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.
In the opening five matches in English Premier League, Berbatov netted six goals, including a hat-trick against Liverpool. It was a revival of a great footballer, who had earned a lot of respect because of his amazing football skills.
But, since the treble against Liverpool, which happened on 19 September, Berbatov has failed to shine even once. In twelve fixtures played this season, the Bulgarian striker stands on a total five number of goals, going on a dry run since the Liverpool game.
The expectations from Berbatov exceeded normal levels, but he has failed to live to up these expectations.
Normally, Sir Alex Ferguson does not give a lot of chances to his players. However, in recent years, there has been a drought in Manchester United’s striking force, which has made it possible for Berbatov to play for longer spells. But, he has been wastage
of money for United, proving to be a real bad decision made by Ferguson, who is an unlikely person to commit such errors. Nevertheless, Berbatov has a last chance in United’s shirt, to prove himself, and if he fails to do so he would surely be shown the door.
Recently, the speculations were circulating the English media regarding Dimitar Berbatov’s exit from Manchester United. The reports linked Berbatov with Karim Benzema, the striker from Real Madrid and France. It was suggested that Manchester United and Real
Madrid would be involved in a swap deal involving these strikers.
Apparently, both the strikers are unwanted in their current clubs and both have been big disasters, as they were a part of huge money deals but they failed to make a considerable contribution. Therefore, the idea behind this transfer is that these players
have been playing in wrong set-ups. Previously, Karim Benzema was highly tipped to be a part of Manchester United but Real Madrid jumped in and sealed the deal.
However, the manager of Dimitar Berbatov has rejected these rumours. Ferguson was also wary of his striker’s poor form but he blamed himself for this. According to Ferguson, United had a lot of options in the forward line and players were swapped frequently.
Therefore, Berbatov could not continue his goal-scoring run for long, because of the gaps created by Ferguson’s rotation policy.
Ferguson also said that Berbatov has not lost his form, but he is struggling for the time being. He told that he would help the striker in regaining his quality touch for the benefit of the club. Also, the manager of Manchester United hoped that after Wayne
Rooney’s return Berbatov would improve because of his better understanding with the English striker.
The only high point of Berbatov’s career is a hat-trick. Apart from this, he has not been showing any kind of form. Ferguson, right now, is only trying to keep the morale of his player high, because Berbatov’s must have lost a lot of confidence. All Ferguson
needs from the Bulgarian is to score a few more goals in the remaining part of the season.
