Dimitar Berbatov’s future looks bleak at Old Trafford as contract talks with Manchester United break down
Manchester United’s Bulgarian goal-scoring machine, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dimitar-Berbatov-c11254 seems more than likely to be heading for the exit door at Old Trafford, following the breaking down of contract talks that were held between the club and the player over the course of the
last couple of weeks.
What has been reported is that United were initially willing to offer the player a two-year extension to his contract with the team and in turn keep him tied down to the club till 2014. All of this was agreed before the Christmas break last year. However,
when the player went back to discuss his future with the club, they decided to change the look of his contract altogether.
The team is now willing to offer the player only a one-year contract extension, which could further be extended based on the player's performances next season. It is also reported that the team is willing to offer the player as much as £120,000 a week, which
would mean that the player is to get a massive £40,000 pound raise in his current salary.
A source close to the club, when talking about Berbatov, is reported to have said, “The combination of Berbatov turning 30 [in January] and the rise of Javier Hernandez has changed things. Hernandez was not expected to perform as well as he has and the return
of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 to top form has also weakened Berbatov’s case for a longer contract.”
Berbatov made his move to United from Tottenham Hotspur at the start of the 2008 season, for a fee set to be worth just over 30 million pounds. That fee also happens to be the highest amount United have paid for any player. Since making his move to the club,
the player has gone on to make 124 appearances and has found the back of the net 48 times.
The striker is also the current leading goal scorer in the Premier League at the moment, but despite that fact, it seems like almost nothing is going to keep the forward with the club for another season.
At the moment, Tottenham Hotspur, the player's former employees, seem to be showing the most interest in the striker and have been reported to be willing to bring the player back to White Hart Lane. Nonetheless, if United are to sell the player, then they
are going to look to make the maximum profit off the player as possible, hence the team is more likely to sell the player to whatever team is offering the highest amount for the player.
However, with the player now being 30 years old, it seems unlikely that the team would be able to get near the same amount that they paid for the player in 2008.
