Dimity Stoyle and Cannelle Bulard stay on top in Round 4 of Billabong ISA World Surfing Games qualifier
The Billabong International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games continued with the fourth round of Women’s qualifiers on Wednesday, June 29th.
Australia’s Dimity Stoyle prevailed in the first heat, while her compatriot Jessi Miley-Dyer took the runner-up place, earning both the surfers a place in the next round. New Zealand’s Paige Hareb was a bit unlucky to finish in third position, forced to
compete in the repercharge round.
In the second heat, France’s Cannelle Bulard walked away with the top honours. Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich clinched second place to join the first place finisher in the next round. France’s Alize Arnaud rounded out the bottom position to head to repercharge
round and attempt a comeback.
Stoyle was among the few surfers who had been managing to show consistent performance during the qualifiers stage. Wednesday did not turn out to be any different for as she faced her latest set of rivals in a three-way battle.
While only managing to catch three waves during the heat, Stoyle really made two of them count. She locked a wave to throw earn herself 7.10 points off it and soon followed it up with a 6.36-point wave. The heat total of 13.46 turned out to be sufficient
to get her the top slot.
It turned out to be an intense battle between Dyer and Hareb, with both the women fighting hard for second place. Eventually, the Australian managed to edge past the New Zealander, scoring 11.52 points off her two waves against Hareb’s 11.34.
In the second heat of round four, Bulard was the only one who seemed completely at ease on her surfboard. The other two surfers were evidently struggling to cope with the un-cooperating low tides.
Bulard collected a 7.00 early in the battle to put pressure on her competitors. Just a while later, she locked another wave to score 6.02 points off it and finish with a two-wave total of 13.02 points. The score carried him off to victory.
Mulanovich, who has been making quite an impact in the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour’s current season, seemed a bit out of rhythm as she struggled to adjust to the conditions. She still managed to lock two waves and made the
made those really count, earning a 5.10 and 6.42, to finish with a heat-total of 11.52 points.
Arnaud earned 3.70 and 3.36 off his two waves to finish with a disappointing 7.06 points. Even though out of the open-qualifiers for now, she still has an opportunity to make a comeback by regaining her form and surviving the repercharge heat.
