Australia’s Dimity Stoyle emerged victorious in the women’s field at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star rated Burton Toyota Pro after she got the better of compatriot and close friend Sally Fitzgibbons in the final at the Merewether
Beach in Newcastle, Australia, on Sunday, February 24, 2013.
For someone who is hardly a prominent name in professional surfer to finish on top of a surfer who is consistently maintaining her positions on the number 2 slot in the ASP World rankings is something that the fans of female surfing will not be forgetting
anytime soon.
“I can’t believe I won,” said an excited Stoyle after the final.”I could not hear the scores out there and it wasn’t until I came in that Sally (Fitzgibbons) told me I won – It was so cool that she chaired me up the beach – she’s a close friend and I really
look up to her.”
With the field comprising of some really great talent from around the globe, Fitzgibbons could not have asked for a better warm-up before heading to Gold Coast for the opening event of the 2013 ASP Women’s World Tour, Roxy Pro.
Looking in great touch since the very first day, it seemed as if she was going to comfortably clinch the win.
While she managed to stamp her authority during most part of the week, she was unable to hold her own against Stoyle in the most important heat of the competition, the final.
As the battle for the overall victory got underway, Fitzgibbons got off to a solid start and managed to quickly move into a dominant position after scoring a 7.67 off her first business-wave.
She went on to add an additional 6.00 points to her account, thus getting to a heat-total of 13.67 points.
Stoyle, on the other hand, remained patient as she waited for the arrival of a juicy opportunity to get some big score on the score-board.
It was not until halfway through the heat that she locked her first wave of the heat. The selection was an excellent one, allowing her to earn an 8.67 off it.
Setting herself up in a position to go for the win, she scored a 6.00 off her second business-wave, thus finishing the heat on a combined heat-total of 14.67 points.
The world’s best female surfers will be seen in action this Saturday as the Roxy Pro kicks-off at Gold Coast.
