Question:

Dimming fluorescent lighting

I have a 10 gallon hexagonal tank with a few neon tetras in it, densely planted with fake plants. They really don't like the fluorescent light, but I'd like to be able to see them during the day. Is there a safe way for me to dim the light (maybe put up netting or something to diffuse it, or an electrical dimmer) or do I have to get a new light fixture?

  1. I think its a pretty bad idea to try and block some of the light out, it could potentially end up in a fire (although fluorescent lamps arent that hot...still wouldnt risk it).

New light fixture is the way to go.

  2. Putting something as simple as a piece of screen between the light and the tank would be a start.  Floating plants will help to disperse it, and the fish will find comfort in their shady refuge.  Short of that, there's the choice of buying a weaker light, but that's not a great option...

  3. definetley a new light fixture

you might try to google a diy version though
