Dinara Safina to miss rest of the season due to back injury – Tennis News
Former world number 1 Dinara Safina of Russia will not play again this season because of a recurring back injury.
Safina wrote on her official website, "I'm sorry to report that my back is still acting up and I will not be able to play until at least the end of the year.”
The Russian added, "I don't know how long my time out is going to last because I don't want to torture myself and my body anymore.”
The Monte Carlo, Monaco resident has not played any tournament since May, this year. Safina will be unable to take part in her third consecutive grand slam event i.e. US Open later this month. She had to also pull out of the French Open and Wimbledon earlier
this season.
Safina has been facing back injuries for a couple of years now. The Russian, after missing most of the 2009 season, made a comeback at the start of this year.
Safina failed to win even a single match at the first three tournaments she played in 2011. She started off at the ASB Classic in Auckland but could not clear the first hurdle as she was defeated by Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium in three sets 6-3 6-7(2) 6-1
in the opening round. Then, Safina moved to Hobart, where she lost to French Marion Bartoli in straight sets 6-0 6-1 in the first round. The Russian was handed a humiliating defeat by Kim Clijsters of Belgium at the Australian Open, failing to claim even a
single game and losing the opening round match 0-6, 0-6.
The 25-year-old finally succeeded in winning her first match at the BMW Malaysian Open, when she beat a low ranked Chinese player, Xinyun Han in straight sets 6-2 6-0 in the first round. However, Safina could not move further as he was defeated by Czech
Lucie Safarova in three sets 6-3 4-6 6-3 in the next match. The Russian forfeited her quarterfinal match against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus at the Andalucia Tennis Experience in April. She played her last match at the Mutua Madrid Open, losing to Julia Goerges
of Germany in three sets 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the round of 32.
Safina, the younger sister of two time grand slam winner Marat Safin, faced criticism when she reached at the top of the WTA Rankings without winning a grand slam in 2009. The Russian rose to the top spot after reach the title match at the Australian Open
and French Open. However, she ended runner-up at both of the grand slams, losing to Serena Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova respectively. She also reached the semi-finals at the Wimbledon Championships, where she was beaten by Venus Williams. Safina remained
at the top of the world rankings for 26 weeks.
