Ding Junhui elbows Marcus Campbell in last 32 of the 2011 Welsh Open – Snooker news
The Masters champion Ding Junhui survived a scare at the 2011 Welsh Open as he was trailing Marcus Campbell by 2-0 and had to claw back from there to win 4-3.
Ding was hardly given a chance to play any shot in the first two frames from his opponent.
The Scotsman after a very good break-off shot was leading Ding by 13-1 when Ding also potted a few balls and grabbed a two-point lead but the Dumbarton potter made a very fine clearance after getting a chance taking the first frame 1-0.
Similarly, the second frame also was taken by Campbell as he dominated it with a break of 63 when he was already leading it by 32-1.
He was leading Ding by a frame score of 2-0 and there was a shock on the cards as Ding was the favourite.
In the third frame, Campbell was again the first one to be among the balls but he missed an easy black at 17-0 getting Ding back on the table. Ding started off and was toiling some rhythm before he was forced to play safe. He was now leading Campbell
39-18 when another poor shot from him gave Ding a chance to add up a few more points to his lead. Ding took his first frame making scores 2-1.
In the fourth frame, Ding got a chance after his opponent missed a pink in the centre, but wasted it. Campbell on the other hand was also not able to punish Ding and this time Ding was among the balls having a lead of 32-5 and with a break of 47, he
levelled the scores by 2-2.
The fifth frame was dominated by the Masters Champion as he compiled a magnificent break of 125 in it although he had given a chance to his opponent first but capitalised on it completely after getting back.
Ding was leading 3-2. In the following frame Ding was again the first one among the reds but he missed a long red before Campbell did the likewise seconds later. However, after a few safety shots Campbell found a chance to force the deciding with a
break of 51.
Tension was now palpable in the Newport Centre but Ding Junhui showed his class and made another carving break of 103 in the deciding frame securing his place in the last 16.
He is now going to play on February 17, 2011 against the winner of match number 7 which is among Mark Allen and Rod Lawler.
