Ding Junhui whitewashes Mark Davis, Michael Holt surges into Round 1: 2012 Welsh Open
China’s Ding Junhui outplayed the 2012 Championship League Snooker Group 4 winner, England’s Mark Davis in a one-sided first-round clash at the 2012 Welsh Open snooker event in Newport, Wales. On the other hand, England’s Michael Holt ended Ryan Day’s hopes
to make his way into the first round of the event against compatriot Stephen Lee.
The Chinese potter, Ding Junhui played outstandingly at the baize and whitewashed his opponent by the score line of 4-0. The Chinese Sensation dominated the contest from the very beginning and took just 50 minutes to nudge the Englishman down in marvellous
fashion.
The whitewash victory has pushed him into the second round of the tournament where he will face the defending champion and current World Snooker Champion, Scotland’s John Higgins who defeated Junhui’s compatriot Liang Wenbo by a 4-1 score line.
Along with some small knocks, the Star of the East pocketed a couple of cracking knocks of 81 and 50, as he is famous for his break-building skills that were enough to unnerve Davis. Despite having a recent victory up his sleeves, Davis was not able to disturb
Junhui and slipped four frames down in no time.
Meanwhile, the local hero, Ryan Day failed to impress his home crowd in the final qualifying match against Michael Holt and tumbled down by 4-0. Holt potted stunning breaks of 79, 72 and 50 to oust Day and surge into the first round of 2012 Welsh Open, where
he will meet compatriot Stephen Lee.
Holt spoke to the media, “I played well and didn't miss much. I've always been on the fringes of breaking through. I know I'm good enough; it's just a question of doing it out there. There's no magic formula. I've beaten most of the top players; it's just
a matter of stringing it together. I've got Stephen Lee next who's another great player...if you find one who isn't, let me know!”
Holt last played against Lee in the 2011 Snooker Shootout where he was defeated 62-34. He will have to pull up his socks to beat Lee in Round 1.
