Question:

Dining at a "semi-fancy" restaurant in Toronto?

Hey,

I am thinking about going out on a date in a "semi-fancy" restaurant, with the problem being that I've never been to one before. The question: when I get to the restaurant is it expected that we order an appetizer, main meal, and desert + wine? I am not asking this just to know whether I can get away with going to a restaurant without paying too much, I am just not sure what are the "rules" in the fancy restaurants.

Also, I am thinking about spending roughly 150CAD for the 2 of us, and looking for a non-Asian cuisine (maybe Italian). Could you recommend a place in Toronto (downtown, or south of Y&E). I've been told to check out the CN Tower 360 restaurant, but I've also heard that it could easily go way over my budget.

Any input is very appreciated.

Cheers.

  1. Most places don't expect you to be posh these days...but I'd avoid wearing jeans ;)

Try the Rosewater Supper Club. It's downtown and 'semi-fancy'.

    Have a look:

The menu is there as well, so you can price everything before you go...I think you could easily have starters, mains, drinks and dessert for under $150.

    Good luck!

  2. yeah my house ill make you some *** on a plate i wont charge much

  3. No, you are not expected to order from every part of the menu.  You can only order your dinner and water to drink if that is all you want.  Lots of people do.

I just got back from Toronto and made the mistake of going to Ruth Criss's.  Knew it was going to be expensive, but OMG!  Don't go there.

If you do go there you would have to order carefully with no appetizer or dessert.  They expect you to share the very large side dishes, so you shouldn't order side dishes individually.

  4. the rules in a Fancy restaurant are the same as any where. Just order what you want. Getting an appetizer, wine and the whole bit just makes the dinner more enjoyable.

For great food in a slightly fancy restaurant try Jamie Kennedy's Wine Bar at Church and Front street. Everything on the menu is appetizer size so for two people you'd order about 5 or 6 plates. It's unbelievably good and you get to try a lot of different things. For a date it's good too because it creates conversation. You can easily spend $150 there with wine.
