  1. You start using the utensils furthest away from the dish and work your way in during courses.  There is a fork for your appetizer, salad and main course.  The three spoons are stumping me a little, but there might be a soup spoon a dessert spoon and a coffee spoon.  Sometimes, if you are eating seafood, there will be a special fork for that as well.  It's awesome to eat in a fine dining restaurant like that, but geeze, who wants to be intimidated by all that stuff!?!  Hope you find this helpful.

  2. Formal dinner settings can vary from place to place.  But this is pretty standard.

Starting from L to R...at the edge of the table, nearest you.

Napkin, Salad/Appetizer fork, dinner fork, seafood fork Then you have your dinner plate, with a soup bowl placed on top.  To the right of your plate, you will have a dinner knife, dinner spoon and soup spoon.

Directly above the knives and spoons from L to R, you have a water glass, red wine glass and a white wine glass, placed at a slight downward angle, with the water glass being at the highest point.

Directly above your dinner plate you will have a dessert fork (tines pointing to the right) and above that a dessert spoon (spoon part pointing to the left)

To the left of your dessert fork and spoon you will have a bread plate, with a bread knife placed across the top of the plate, with the knife pointing to the left.

  3. Since the restaurant doesn't know in advance what you will be eating, they will give you extra utensils.  You will have a salad fork, a dinner fork, and a desert fork.  You will also have a soup spoon, desert spoon, and a coffee spoon.  Sometimes one of the spoons is for sorbet which is served just before the entree.  You may also be given multiple knives in some cases.  You could possibly have a salad knife (though not often) a butter knife, and a dinner knife.

Just remember two simple rules: 1) use the utensils farthest from the plate first working your way in, and 2) you're the customer and the restaurant is mostly concerned with your satisfaction.

  4. I dunno..all I do know that the smaller fork is the salad fork and the bigger spoon is usually the soup spoon.  Try this Web site...  http://www.schonwalder.net/Tablesettings...

  5. Salad fork, dinner fork, dessert fork... just start from the outside (furthest from the plate) and work your way in...

  6. Three spoons might be for soup, dessert and hot beverage. Three forks for salad, entree and dessert. Or one could be a fish fork.
