I am going to travelling to the temple cities in southern india soon - tanjore, madurai, trichy etc. I want to make a list of good places to eat. I found pretty good online resource - NeedGrub.com to find restarants in the southern states. Are they are any other resources I can look up online for more info?

  1. Assuming you are vegetarian, these South Indian temple towns have many famous eating places -- since they get a lot of traffic, mainly pilgrims and some tourists. So you can't go wrong by asking locals.who will gladly tell you where to get good food for decent prices.

Many good places are often located with easy accessibility --directly across and adjacent to the temples. When needing breakfast or light meals just ask  for good "Tiffin" type places --   Dosais. Idli, vada, Uppuma and such light fare...are served.  For lunch, ask for "Nalla Sappadu" places --- the beauty of TN is that there are still places working through generations --- serving hot, fresh, well-made food. in the traditional style, as unlimited meals on banana leaves.

Some travel guides  like the one called 'South India' by Lonely Planet will list some mid-range to high end eateries, as well as other info so you might want to invest in one of these.

Have good Darshan ...I've been to these places  and loved every moment.. As of yet, there are no comprehensive listings that I know of.

  2. Travel time,

    Lodging and boarding...

near by areas to be covered........

  3. sure you can, just keep surfing

  4. There are a lot of places where you can eat. Even the smallest eateries are very well maintained and the food is home cooked without the addition of soda, etc that you see in big city hotels. Don't miss out the 'Prasadam' that you get in the temples, half the time you can survive on that. I absolutely had a great time when I visited all these places and much more. I am missing it all so dearly sitting here in a different country. Hope you have a good time.
