Question:

Dinner plates made from Good Plastics??

My new house doesn't have a dishwasher, so I want some dishes that are lightweight. But I don't want bad plastics. I can find children's plates and bowls, but what about adult dinnerware? Is malamine (sp?) made from safe plastics?

Thanks!

  1. You cannot heat melamine plates/bowls in a microwave, because  melamine can break down and leach toxins.

Melamine dishware is often a combination of melamine and formaldehyde. Melamine is also suspected to be what contaminated pet food and caused kidney failure in so many pets last year.

Research that "Avoid plastic dishes and utensils for meals. Alternatives include glass, ceramic, wood, stainless steel, and lacquer ware."

i would suggest avoid plastic completely.

  2. I'd consider looking at Target, Pier One, or Cost Plus World Market for a lighter or thinner ceramic. They have some nice designs that aren't heavy and you can avoid the petrochemical problem altogether.
