Dino Marcan fights past Goran Tosic into the main draw – Arad Challenger 2012
World number 301, Dino Marcan of Croatia, bounced back from a deficit of one set to overcome Montenegro’s 418th ranked player, Goran Tosic, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the final round of the qualifying draw at the ARAD Challenger
in Romania on Monday.
It took the Croatian two hours and 12 minutes to get past his opponent in a close contest.
Marcan and Tosic opened by holding their serves in the first two games to take the score to 1-1. Raising the level of his game, the Croatian grabbed four games in a row, breaking Tosic in the third and fifth to build a 5-1 lead.
However, the scenario suddenly changed later on, with the Montenegrin not allowing Marcan to win even a single game, snatching five consecutively and winning it 7-5.
Tosic did not hit any ace and committed one double fault, keeping his first serve percentage at 67 and converting 15 of the 24 of them into points. The Montenegrin also responded quite well to his opponent’s deliveries, as he clinched
six of the 17 first and 10 of the 16 second return points.
The 29-year-old, Tosic, made a strong start in the second set, capturing opening three games to attain a 3-0 advantage. The Montenegrin held his serve in the fifth one to take the score to 4-1 in his favour. Though, Marcan responded
in the same manner, in which Tosic had performed, as he snatched five straight games to capture it 6-4.
The Croatian smacked in a single ace and made one double fault in the second set. He put in 78 percent of the first serves and won 15 of the 21 points on them. The 21-year-old could not save the only break point he faced but compensated
by making the most of the two opportunities he received.
Marcan and Tosic made a stable start in the third set, as they did not drop their serve in the first eight games to level the score at 4-4. The Croatian drew the final blood, as he claimed decisive breakthrough in the ninth and
held his next serve to triumph 6-4.
