The former Italy goalkeeper believes that mistakes can come from anybody, and insists that the blunder will not affect his performance in the next match.
Legendary Italian goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dino-c11319 Zoff has come to the support of Gigi Buffon, and insists that a keeper’s mistake is just like that of any other player. He criticised the press for creating frenzy over a petty matter.
Buffon threw the one-goal advantage over Lecce with a mistake that gifted the opposition a simple goal, and caused the game to end in a 1-1 stalemate for the Bianconeri.
The two dropped points from the game coupled with AC Milan’s win over Atalanta, has seen the distance between the two Serie A frontrunners reduce to just one-point.
The former Italian captain stated that the matter is being wrongly exaggerated in the media, and insisted such an attitude will only serve to put even more pressure on the Bianconeri keeper.
The former Juve player insisted that although such a howler is hard to forget for any player, he is confident that the experienced goalkeeper will get over it. He insisted that mistakes are an inevitable part of the game of football.
While talking to ANSA, the 70-year-old said:
“These things happen. There is no reason to make a drama out of it. I think that Buffon, even if he hasn’t forgotten about it, has put it behind him. It was just an error, a mistake that can happen in the game.”
Juventus are set to face Cagliari in their next Serie A fixture, and their competition with Milan is now a point for point battle for the Scudetto.
Zoff stated that the event would have affected Buffon at the time, but insisted that the memories of the blunder will not haunt him in the next game. The Italian legend went on to state that the mistakes are a part and parcel of the game, and insisted that
the fact that they are more noticeable in keepers than others, makes them subjected to stronger criticism.
“It would certainly have affected him at the time, but I don’t expect it to cause any problems for him on Sunday. Everyone in football, in all professions, make mistakes. It is only different for a goalkeeper because it is more evident, but not more serious.”
