Australia’s Dion Atkinson and Hawaii’s Olamana Eleogram moved straight into Round 5 (Round of 16) of the 2012 Telstra Drug Aware Pro after clinching top honours in their respective Round 3 (no-loser Round of 24) heats that went down at Margaret River in
Australia on Wednesday, March 21
The remaining surfers in the first and second heat of Round 3 to find themselves getting relegated to the fourth round (Round of 24).
Some of the best surfers from around the world were in contention for top honours at the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime rated event. The level of competition was evidently high and was raised even further due to the six-foot waves
on offer at Margaret River on Wednesday.
Atkinson took on his fellow countrymen Bede Durbidge and Owen Wright in the first heat of the third round, battling it out to secure a place in the fifth heat without the pressure of going through Round 4 (Round of 24).
As the heat kicked-off, Atkinson got off to a promising start, locking his first business-wave to post a 6.07 on the scoreboard. After a lengthy and equally determined search, he managed to add an additional 7.00 points to his account to finish with a heat-total
of 13.07 points. The score remained unbeatable till the end to jump straight into the fifth round.
Durbidge was forced to settle for runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 11.00 points, which included a 5.40 and 5.60-point wave.
Wright seemed completely out of rhythm during the course of the battle and eventually finishing third with a two-wave total of 5.57 points.
The second heat saw Eleogram take on America’s Gabe Kling and Australia’s Josh Kerr in a three-man battle.
The Hawaiian surfer apparently struggled to lock a decent wave, but eventually found his rhythm in the final minutes of the heat to post a 6.43 and an 8.10 on the scoreboard, consequently finishing with a heat-total of 14.53 points.
Kling rounded out the runner-up position after scoring a 6.50 and 7.10 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 13.60 points.
An in-form Kerr failed to make an impact during the 30-minute heat and only managed to get to a heat-total of 6.50 points, which included a 4.50 and 2.00-point wave.
