Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka overpowers Alamsyah Yunus in semi-final of the Indonesia Open GP Gold
Indonesia’s emerging young shuttler, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka has proved his mental and physical toughness as he defeated his team-mate, Alamsyah Yunus in a nail-biting Men’s Singles semi-final at the Indonesia Open GP Gold, on Saturday, October 1, in Indonesia.
Rumbaka, who is currently World Number 27, played planned and consistent badminton against the World Number 31, Alamsyah, in a thrilling rubber-set fight and won it by taking 76 minutes in the court.
The opening few minutes of the first game was incredible, as both team-mates put up an entertaining show of quality badminton. However, in the starting points, they failed to manage a comfortable gap as the score remained tied at 8-8. At this stage, Alamsyah
played well and took a two-point lead of 11-9.
Nobody could manage a comfortable gap until the ending stage when the score reached 19-19. At this critical stage, Alamsyah got three set points but he failed to score of them as Rumbaka played phenomenal badminton and came from behind to win the game by
a dramatic margin of 24-22, in 25 minutes.
Rumbaka took an early lead of 7-2 in the second set as he was playing on a completely different level. However, Alamsyah managed to remain close by reaching at 8-11 until the one-minute interval.
Alamsyah increased his speed in the second-half of the game and levelled the score at 17-17 by playing remarkable badminton. He continued his better play and reached at 20-17 but failed to finish the set again as Rumbaka levelled the score by reaching 20-20.
However, he made a blunder by playing a wrong shot and lost the set by a margin of 20-22 in 26 minutes.
The third set of this thrilling fight was also close in the first-half, where Rumbaka was just ahead at 11-10. He started to employ safe strokes and remained patient to get the right opportunity. Rumbaka’s planned game helped him to take the final game with
a big margin of 21-13 in 25 minutes.
Rumbaka won this nerve-wrecking battle by a margin of 24-22, 20-22 and 21-13, in 75 minutes. In the Men’s Singles final, Rumbaka will face either compatriot, Taufik Hidayat or Tommy Sugiarto.
