  1. Take the Metro-North train from New Haven's Union Station to Penn Station in NYC.  Schedules, fares, etc. at www.mta.info.  (you could also take amtrak but it's more expensive).

When you leave the train at Penn Station, head upstairs and toward the "7th Avenue" exit.  This will let you out at 7th Avenue and 33rd Street.  Get your bearings and head northeast; the ESB is located at 35th and 5th (only you know which street your appointment is across).

  2. Metro North will take you to Grand Central Terminal, which is about nine blocks from the Empire State Building.  When you leave the Terminal, walk west to fifth ave.  If you exited the building on 42d street, you would turn right.  At Fifth Ave, turn left and eight short blacks later you will be there.

If walking about a half mile is not a good option, take the #6 train southbound one stop and then  walk over two blocks.  33d street goes west, which is what you need to do.

  3. Metro-North, get a train for New York, and stay on it all the way to the end.  It'll take you to Grand Central Terminal (the previous poster's mention of Penn Station is an error - it happens to us all).

Once you're at Grand Central, you have options.  If you can take a 10-minute walk, walk down Park, Madison, or 5th Avenue (any of them work) to 34th Street. The Empire State Building is near the corner of 34th and 5th.

If you want to take a train to the area, get a downtown #6 train from Grand Central.  Take it one stop, to 33rd Street.  Get out, and find 34th and 5th.

If at any time, you find Lexington Avenue, don't cross it; that means you're going the wrong way.  This is also true for 3rd Avenue.
