  1. Check out MapQuest.com They usually come pretty close with directions. Just need a start address and a destination address.

  2. Hi there -

Loreto is a beautiful city with so much to do - you will be happy that you made the journey.  We went on a Baja camping trip a few years ago and Loreto was by far our nicest stop. (We stayed in a luxurious hotel there.)  So, I checked Yahoo! Maps for you and it seems like it would take about 20 hours for you to get from Arlington, Texas to the border crossing in San Diego.  That is where we crossed over, and from San Diego the driving time to Loreto (which we broke up over the course of about three days) was about 15 hours.  (The total distance from San Diego in miles is about 715 miles.)

It is better to drive only in daylight hours in Mexico as there is not good lighting at night and the roads can curve around cliffs or have unexpected potholes.

During daylight, though, it is a stunning road trip and you should definitely bring a camera to take photos of the beautiful vistas - especially once you get to Bahia Concepcion and Bahia de Los Angeles - between Mulege and Loreto.  If you like camping at all, you should think about spending a couple of days on the water here - there are lots of camping sites with palapas and places where you can rent kayaks and other water sport equipment.

A really good site that will give you a ton of information on traveling to Loreto is:  http://www.loreto.com/destination.htm.  I found them  because they are recommended by our favorite Mexican insurance company, Baja Bound.Com.  Speaking of which, if you haven't checked into Mexican insurance yet for your car, you should definitely do that before leaving because that is the one thing I would never venture into Mexico without.  (It's mandatory in Mexico anyway...) We were in a minor fender bender on one of our road trips and if we hadn't had the insurance, it could really have been rough for us.  Anyway, it's not too expensive so definitely worth looking into.

Loreto is a really classic town - gorgeous mission (the nicest one I've seen!) plus excellent sport fishing companies, scuba diving, snorkeling.  Basically the whole thing is a marine park and full of great activities.  We really like kayaking so we did a lot of that there.  And if you're feeling brave, try the street tacos from one of the vendors!  They are completely amazing and we didn't get sick on them at all!

    Have fun!
