I tried to hook up a directv receiver that I had in my basement to a tv and it said "searching for signal" This is a receiver that I was using about a year ago so it is not that old. What can I do to make this work?

  1. The receiver needs to have the coax input line from the dish attached and your service needs to be current to get the signal.  You aren't providing much info here.

  2. Is it still authorized by DirecTV to receive their programming?

If you have it hooked up to the DirecTV antenna, and the antenna is pointed at the correct satellite and the receiver is authorized to receive DirecTV, and you have the authorization card in the receiver, then call up the DirecTV folks and have them "hit"  the receiver. (HIT-to resend a authorization signal to the box)

    That should do it.

  3. Is the receiver saying "searching for signal" or is it your TV?

If your TV is saying that, make sure the receiver is plugged in and turned on.  Also make sure the TV is set to the proper input where the receiver is plugged into.

If you're getting a picture from the receiver (e.g. the directv logo) and it says searching for signal, then its having problems finding the satellites.  Did you move the satellite dish at all?  It may be out of alignment.
