Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez help Liverpool beat Sunderland 2-0: Barclays Premier League
Kenny Dalglish’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dirk-Kuyt-c11348 scored a controversial penalty in the first half, while Luis Suarez scored
a stunner after the interval to secure all three points for the away side.
The home side started with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-c10193 Wellbeck and Stephane Sessegnon provided support on the wings.
Liverpool started with Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez upfront, handing Carroll his first Premier League start. Dirk Kuyt and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jay-Spearing-c18106 in the centre of midfield.
It was a brilliant start from the away side as they made some great runs forward right from the kick-off. Kuyt’s shot forced a brilliant save from Simon Mignolet after Andy Carroll’s header fell to the Dutchman in the fifth minute. Kuyt’s header in the very
next minute went just over the bar as the home side lived dangerously.
Sunderland’s first real chance came in the 16th minute, as Wellbeck and Gyan combined brilliantly on the left to put in a dangerous cross, which Richardson narrowly missed in front of the Liverpool goal.
The visitors were awarded a controversial penalty in the 32nd minute when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Mensah-c18877 brought down Jay Spearing after some poor defending. Replays showed that the tackle was outside the Sunderland box but the linesman felt otherwise. Kuyt converted
the penalty and Liverpool were 1-0 up.
The Reds could have been 2-0 up in the 37th minute from Suarez’s superb left footed shot, which tested the Sunderland goalkeeper, who pulled off another amazing save to deny the visitors. The score remained 1-0 at the interval.
The Reds returned with the same momentum and continued to dominate the game. Andy Carroll was denied his first goal for Liverpool in the 51st minute when his header was cleared off the line from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-Cattermole-c21868. Suarez was inches away from scoring
four minutes later from a free kick from just outside the box.
The Uruguayan finally doubled the lead for the away side in the 77th minute with a sensational finish, scoring from the tightest of angles. The former Ajax striker’s shot rocketed between Mignolet and the goal post to give the Reds a comfortable
two goal lead.
John Mensah was sent off eight minutes from full-time, ending his miserable day on the field. He was shown a straight red for a tackle on Suarez just outside the box.
Liverpool remain sixth in the Premier League table and are now within four points of Tottenham Hotspur, who have a game in hand. The Black Cats on the other hand, slipped to ninth place after suffering their fifth defeat in six games.
