Dirk Kuyt fears injury is serious
Holland international Dirk Kuyt is worried that the ankle injury he picked up in the national team’s UEFA 2012 European Football Championship qualifying win over Sweden on Tuesday, October 12, will prove to be serious.
The Liverpool attacker was forced to leave the pitch just over an hour into the 4-1 win in Amsterdam, when he landed in an unnatural way after jumping for the ball against opposition player Daniel Majstorovic.
The 30-year-old believes that he may have damaged ligaments, but is still awaiting the results of tests.
Kuyt told Dutch website Sport Promotion, "The swelling is so bad that we will only know with any certainty in a few days. But I fear the worst. You know your own body and it does not feel good. The doctors have the same feeling, that it's probably
torn ankle ligaments. Let's hope they and I are wrong."
Kuyt added that he was desperate to return to the match after receiving treatment, but the Netherlands medical staff refused to let him do so.
"I was so eager to get on after receiving treatment. It was nice that we were doing do well and closing in on victory. But the doctor said no. And when I tried to move the ankle, [I] almost collapsed, so he was right to keep me on the sidelines."
If the injury is a serious one, it will prove to be a blow for his club. Liverpool is currently stuck in the relegation zone of the English Premier League, having picked up just six points from their opening seven games.
Kuyt is likely to miss their crunch match against local rivals Everton on Sunday, with the Toffees sitting just one place above them in the table on goal difference, as well as the UEFA Europa League match against Napoli on October 21.
