Dirk Kuyt out for 3 months following ankle injury
According to the latest media reports coming out of England, Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt is set to sit out for the next 3 months after tearing his ankle ligaments on international duty. Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk had admitted that Kuyt’s injury could
be of a serious nature. Scans on the forward’s ankle have only confirmed the bad news.
Dirk Kuyt has become an integral part of the Reds’ first team squad following his arrival from Feyenoord in 2006. Fitness has never been a problem for the Dutch as the forward played 179 consecutive matches for Feyenoord between March 2001 and April 2006.
Kuyt may lack the silky smooth dribbling of Lionel Messi and the sizzling pace of Cristiano Ronaldo, but his work ethic and a sense of sacrifice for the team have made him a firm favourite with both the Scousers and the Oranje fans.
Liverpool is a club already going through a turmoil following their owners-management feud and this news item will only add more misery. The striker will now miss the Derby match against Everton. The two clubs have one of the most famous derbies in the world
and with Everton also struggling to replicate their last season’s form, it will be a crucial match between the two clubs as points have been hard to come by for both.
On a positive note, Star Forward and talisman Fernando Torres is likely to be back for the match against the Toffees. Torres has been struggling with injuries since last year and his most recent injury occurred during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Bolton on October
3rd. Torres was forced to walk off after just 9 minutes and the former Atletico Madrid skipper was duly ruled out of Spain’s double header against Lithuania and Scotland.
Liverpool already lacks the numbers in their ‘wing’ department with the likes of Joe Cole and Ryan Babel struggling for form and fitness. It would be interesting to see how Roy Hodgson copes with the latest blow. The way Liverpool approaches Kuyt’s injury
set back will most probably make or break Liverpool’s season.
