Dirk Nowitzki might require a surgery on swollen right knee – NBA Update
Mark Cuban may be confident that Dallas Mavericks still have the pedigree to qualify for the playoffs, but he and all the Mavericks fans may be in for a huge scare.
Dirk Nowitzki, the man who has been the face of the franchise for over a decade and was the main reason why Mavs won their first NBA championship in 2011, might have to undergo a surgery on his right knee. It was the same knee
which forced the German to sit out the game against FC Barcelona Regal on Tuesday, one which Dallas lost by 99-85.
The sharp shooter, while talking to the ‘The Dallas Morning News’ recently, revealed that surgery might be an option if things do not improve;
"We'll see how it responds," Nowitzki told. "But the longer we wait, obviously the worse it is. If we have to do something, it'd be better to do it quick.
"But we're still hopeful that this is a temporary thing. If we relax and rest it for a week and see how it goes, then we'll have a better idea."
If Nowitzki undergoes a surgery, this could spell havoc for the Mavs. They have lost nearly all of their players from the championship winning team, and are now left with above average players, most of whom have yet to prove themselves.
With Nowitzki around, their transition would have been quite easy but without him on the floor, the Mavs are certainly looking down the barrel.
Mavericks lost Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea last summer as they tried to create a salary cap space to lure in a superstar. Those efforts however went in vain as both Deron Williams and Dwight Howard chose different destinations.
To make the matters worse, Jason Terry and Jason Kidd, also decided to move on.
The Mavs however did make some efforts to assemble a decent roster in the later part of the off season. They claimed Elton Brand off the waiver, added Chris Kaman, brought in Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones through a trade with
Indiana Pacers, before finally acquiring fourth year guard O.J. Mayo.
This crop however requires a leader and Nowitzki needs to remain fit, for that to happen.
