Dirk Nowitzki not sure where Deron Williams is headed this summer – NBA Update
The speculation involving Deron Williams’s future in free agency has created a sense of anxiety around the Dallas Mavericks camp, which is hopeful to land the all-star point guard to begin their rebuilding process.
There has been an uneasy silence surrounding the whole matter in the past few days and speculations are growing that Williams might well stay back at Brooklyn.
Dirk Nowitzki, the man who has carried the Dallas franchise on his shoulders for quite some time now, spoke about the matter in a radio interview on Friday and said that he was not quite sure;
"I still think it's 50-50, I just don't know."
NBA`s free agency would start on July 1st just after the German gets done with playing his Heroes Celebrity Charity game. He would be hoping the saga to soon come to its close as it has already created a lot of tension
among both teams, the Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks.
Williams recently singled out the Mavericks and Nets as the two teams he would be considering to sign with as a free agent. However Deron`s recent act of inviting Nets coach Avery Johnson to his private birthday dinner has created
a storm in the Mavericks ranks.
The Brooklyn Nets are speculated to have offered Williams a five year contact which will make his income around $100 million. If that is the case, it would mean that the Nets are outbidding the Mavericks offer by $25 million and
are also giving him an extra one year.
This puts Dallas under a lot of pressure as Mark Cuban had cleared up a lot of cap space by letting go several players including Tyson Chandler last year. The main plan was to bring in Williams over from the Nets and return the
team to its dominant status the following year.
The point guard can have an instant impact with the Mavericks and Nowitzki is well aware of the fact because by bringing Deron in, they can get their hands on a much younger player who can shape the future.
Williams can also provide them with much needed versatility and spectacular play making to get this Dallas team back on its way.
"If he comes, we can be right back in the mix. We obviously know that the top in the West is very, very good, very athletic and young, just a bunch of playmakers on the team," Nowitzki said,. "We definitely need him if we want
to make the next step."
If in case the Williams deal fails to go through, Dallas have made it clear that they will pursue the option of Steve Nash, the Phoenix Suns superstar. They already have a veteran swingman in Jason Kidd. He is also a free agent
but the Mavs have hinted on retaining him. Nash however will be a short term solution and the franchise might have to wait till the next season to finally mount a formidable charge towards the championship.
