Dirk Nowitzki pounds 35 as the Dallas Mavericks edge out the Phoenix Suns 112-106
On Thursday night at US Airways Center, the seven foot tall German sharp shooter, Dirk Nowitzki erupted with 35 points as the Dallas Mavericks squeaked out a 112-106 win over the Phoenix Suns in front of their home crowd.
Nowitzki led the Mavs from the very start and scored 8 points in the first twelve minutes as the Mavericks led the first quarter 28-25. Steve Nash made 6 points for the Suns.
The second quarter was even better than the first as both teams fought hard to register their dominance over each other. Both the teams scored 26 points in this section as the three point gap remained, going into the break. Nowitzki scored 11 points and
his teammate Jason Terry made 7, out of which two were three pointers. Channing Frye hit 7 points for the Suns. At the end of first half Mavericks were leading 54-51.
Suns started the second half with Vince Carter’s smashing dunk 54-53. Just after 2 minutes play in the third segment Suns tied the scores 59-59, with Robin Lopez’s slam dunk. Then Grant Hill put the Suns in lead when he hit two free throws on Tyson Chandler
shooting foul 59-61. But in last two minutes Nowitzki and company rallied and made aggression, which put the Mavericks in lead again at the close of third segment 85-80.
Mavericks kept the pressure on the Suns in the fourth part too and at one stage stretch the lead up to 9 points 103-94, which is the highest lead taken by any side in the entire game. Suns couldn’t hold up Nowitzki he contributed another 9 points in the
fourth part. Frye added 8 points in the final part, but couldn’t stop the Suns from losing 112-106.
Nowitzki was unstoppable throughout the game, no one from the Suns slowed him down. He also had 1 rebound, provided 4 assists and steal 1. His teammate Terry added 16 points and 7 assists.
Frye was the loser high with 24 points and 8 rebounds, while Vince Carter made 16 points for the Suns. Though Suns gave a tough time to the Mavericks, but they didn’t led a single quarter in the game.
