Dirk Nowitzki wins the Finals MVP award – NBA Update
Dirk Nowitzki was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player and awarded the trophy after game 6 of the NBA Finals. The Dallas Mavericks won game 6 and with it the NBA World Championship for the first time in franchise history.
They defeated the Miami Heat 4 – 2 in the Finals series to secure the crown.
Dirk Nowitzki was without a doubt the most important player for the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals, as he has been in the last decade. Nowitzki, a losing finalist back in 2006, when the Dallas Mavericks lost to the Miami Heat,
was overcome with emotion after the win.
Nowitzki left for the locker room as time ran out, instead of celebrating with his teammates. He came back onto the court after composing himself and spoke to reporters after being given the NBA Finals MVP trophy by basketball
legend Bill Russell.
"I really still can't believe it," summed up Nowitzki’s jubilation at the end of the game.
Dirk has averaged a terrific 26.0 points per game as well as 9.7 rebounds. He had a double-double in the final game, scoring 21 points and hauling down 11 boards. Even though he shot a poor 1-of-12 in the first half, Dirk came
back strong in the end to put the game out of Miami Heat’s reach.
In a NBA Finals that was built up as the start of a Miami Dynasty with their Big Three, Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs to improbable and well deserved victory. In the face of the three superstars of the Miami Heat, Dirk shone brightest
and overshadowed the trio to win the Finals MVP.
The superstar LeBron James, the former finals MVP Dwyane Wade and multiple-time All Star Chris Bosh all looked helpless at the end of the game as Nowitzki knocked down big shot after big shot.
It came as no surprise too, as Dirk has been tremendous in crunch time throughout the Finals. It started at the American Airlines Arena in game 2, when Nowitzki won the game for the Mavs with a left handed layup, a left hand with
a torn tendon in the middle finger.
Nowitzki led his team to a memorable victory in game 4 when he played with a fever but still managed to knock down the shots at the death. Then in game 5 Nowitzki set up Jason Terry for the score tying three and then dunked the
ball on the next possession to give the Mavs a lead that the Heat wouldn’t be able to chase down.
His overall contribution and especially his superb effort time and again with the game on the line in the whole series make Nowitzki more than a worthy winner of the NBA Finals MVP award.
