Any suggestions? KX 65, XR70? Is he too big for a PW50?

  1. I think back when I was 7 years old, I had a BMX bike. Seven years old is a bit young for a motorized dirt bike. Please consider a small quad motorized recreational vehicle. Complete with a safety class and complete parental supervision.

  2. We have a KX65 and my son loves it.. he is now ready to move up to an 85 so we have both at home.  The KX is easy to maintain!  My son raced his 65 for 2 years .. it is a great bike.. if he is looking for power though the KTM 65 has more power than the KX but is taller. At age 7 my son was racing a KTM 50 Sr but was kind of big on it by the end of the season

  3. if you are confident that your son will be able to ride it without being harmed then get him one that you personally feel comfortable with or one that he is comfortable and confident riding with.

  4. Who the h**l are those first two blokes? Preaching gits who obviously have no idea at all about what they are bumping their gums over.

I would have thought that a PW was still OK at his age, Maybe the PW80 would give him a bit more use out of it. You know what they are like though, they grow so d**n fast that what ever you get they will be too big for it before you know it. The nice thing about the PW is that even people who are not that much into bikes know about them so the resale value is pretty good.

How serious do you want him to be - will you go racing? KTM also do a range of bikes for kids.

  5. A seven year old is too young for a dirt bike

    IMHO

  6. how tall is he and his weight? thats the big thing. i would say a KTM 50 or a xr70. i wouldnt start him on a 65, people underestimate those bikes and they are fast. i mean i ride a yz450f and them 65's really do rip. xr50's arent bad, there is a lot of aftermarket parts to make it faster once he gets the basics down. Good luck!!

  7. Under proper supervision and with appropriate safety gear 7 yrs old is a fine age to start learning to ride, especially on dirt.

I would start him out on a CRF 50. It's plentiful aftermarket parts make it a bike he can grow with and build up as he grows. The autoclutch will make learning to ride easier, as his riding skills improve the shifting will come into play.

Also, the Honda CRF 50 has a higher resale than most bikes of that genre.

  8. Both my kids started riding when they were 4 years old, so don't listen to those over protective parents.  Every child is different and you know what your kid can handle.

As far as bikes go, it really depends more on his size.  Since he is a fairly new rider, I would start out with either a Honda CRF50 or a Yamaha PW80 - neither of these bikes have clutches, you just shift as needed.  These are great learning bikes and are easily found used.

Have a great time riding with your kid, it is such a great family thing to do!
