Question:

Dirt bike has no power but still has compression in the kick start?

so i went out on my yz80 2001 bike today let it warm up 4 a bit on tick over then took a few laps around the track not going in the power band to get it fully warmed up. but then i gave it a bit more gas it lost all power and it wouldn't go in the power band or it no longer had a power band. could this be the piston rings? please help and please dont give replys saying take it to a mechanic. i would like to get an idea of the problem as i know a friend who can fix it for me but i need to know what parts to order.

  1. Have you ever put rings in it?

    It's time.

    2 strokes can give false compression readings.

    It may feel like there's compression at the kickstart lever , or give a good reading on a gauge, but the rings only have to be worn a fraction to make a big performance difference.

    Remove the exhaust pipe and look into the exhaust port with a flashlight & mirror.

    Any scoring of the piston and cylinder wall, or dis-coloration below the rings - rebuild the top end (cylinder, piston & rings).


  2. Try putting a new sparkplug and making sure that the gas/oil mixture is correct before you go tearing into the engine.
