  1. you should be able to buy what is commonly referred to as a top end kit for around $100-125 to freshen the engine up.  an experienced person can do a top end in an hour or two (depending on how much beer they are consuming while doing so... LOL).

bikebandit piston kit is $120 http://www.bikebandit.com/aftermarket-pa...

click here http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcy... and there are various diagrams showing how things fit.  if you click on the one for the cylinder shows the head & cylinder area.

if you have a few basic tools and a metric socket set, you should be able to do the work yourself.  I would highly recommend getting a shop manual for your bike as it will help you in the long run on many other aspects of repair & maintenance.

after you have replaced the top end a few times on a 2 stroke, it will all come as second nature to you.

    give it a shot.

one very good reminder is when you slide the cylinder off, stuff a couple of rags down around the connecting rod into the top of the crankcase.  this will save you alot of time and money if you were to drop one little part (like a wrist pin retaining clip) down into the bottom end of the engine ... been there done that one time, quickly learned my lesson and cost me dearly with both time and money.

  2. 2 strokes are easy, It probably just needs a top end, New piston and rings. Not hard to do at all on a 2stroke as there is no time chain. Take a stab at it, you can always take it to the shop if you can't get it back together. Use the owners manual for torque specs.
