what is the best dirt bike for trail riding no bigger than 250cc

for purely trail riding, KDX 200 / 220, CRF250X, WR250, XR250, KLX250, KTM250EXC-RFS or XC, KTM200EXC or XC ...there are a number of very good trail bikes available depending on price & class level of experience.

one of the first choices would be a Kawasaki KDX 200 or 220 which are relatively light weight, good power, good suspension & brake systems, they are set up for enduro and have the torquey feel of a 4 stroke but the power delivery of a 2 stroke.  these will last for many hours of riding whether just play riding or competition of enduro, harescrambles, cross country, etc.  another very good selling point is these are considerable less expensive to purchase (either new or used), parts a readily available throughout the year models, long lasting and fairly easy to work on.  I have owned approximately 12 KDX dating back to 1980 KDX175.  solid bikes.

any of the others are also very good choices and proven trail bikes but could cost you considerable more than the KDX line.  

you could also go with the MX version (CRF, YZF, KXF, RMZ, MXC/SX) but they are designed more for a track, higher RPM so a sizable flywheel weight might need to be added for additional torque for true trail riding.

i recommend the suzuki and kawi 250fs they go anywhere and do anything, whether its trail or track.
