Disability question?

suffer from depression and anxiety and panic disorder. I take meds and I have been going to my doctor for 2 years for this. We have switched my meds and doses a few times. I still suffer from these disorders. The meds help a little but not much. As a teenager maybe like 16 is when all this started. I went to three different psychiatrists and tried three or four medications. The meds didnt help then either. So will social security start my claim from the age of 16 when it started or just when i applied 4 days ago. From my understanding they have to go by when your disorders started. For me it was 16. I am almost 27 now. So is my parents entitled to any money since they paid for my psychiatrists visits and stuff? I was a minor then so i am not sure if my parents will receive money or not. Also i had back surgery in 2005 and my back kills me all the time. But i do not have any medical proof that i cant work b/c of my back. Just the medical chart for the surgery.

When you are a minor, you draw on what your parents have contributed to Social Security, if you have an approved claim during that time. After you turn 18, your previously approved claim is re-evaluated and if approved, the benefits come from money you have paid in. If you have not paid into the system, the system cannot pay you. In order to be approved for SSDI, you must prove that you cannot work at all.

you're only entitled to benefits from the time you apply. SSI will only go back to then.and most times will deny the claim the first few times. In this case you should hire an SSI attorney to appeal the case. Most times they will win you the Benefits you need. Remember medicine is only a way to control the symptoms of depression, anxiety and panic disorder and the psychiatrists will help you get to the root of why and help set up a system that will work with and for you.

No, they don't b/c you were under your parent's care.

Understand that disability is no way to live.  Many people, even with Downs Syndrome, work regular jobs.

You will have a very, very devastating financial future if you choose to go that route.

Even the paraplegic that works as a greeter at Walmart, works full time.  If you are smart enough to work off the books so you can commit the felony crime of tax evasion while the rest of us foot the bill for what you didn't pay it, you are more than capable of working.

If you don't have medical proof that you cannot work, you cannot claim disability.

It's that simple.  Just b/c you had surgery doesn't equal the fact you can't work, you have to get a PHYSICIAN to say you can't work, stand, sit for long periods of time...and you'll be hard-pressed to find one.

They'll only backdate it to the date you last worked...

Odds are it will be from when you applied.  Social Security Disability is for people who have paid into the system while working.  For those who did not work they receive SSI  The amount is around 500. a month.
