Disadvantage of repaired snapped surfboards?

I am planning on buying a 6'11 DHD board, its my first board if I would purchase it. Since I am a begginer,I would consider buying second hand boards. I saw this DHD,problem is it was snapped but repaired. I am just confuse if buying it would be wise. Orignal price for a brand new board is $500+ and its selling price for used is $200+. Is there any disadvantage on performance of the snapped board?and what is also DHD brands reputation?i manage to see the board and it is almost perfectly without dings. The merchant said that it was slightly used before it was snapped.

  1. 200+ for a snapped board?  I think you might be getting ripped off.  It depends on where it was snapped.  If it was just the nose (last foot of the board) you might be okay as you rarely use the nose, especially if you're a beginner.  Even then, I don't recommend ever buying a snapped board as you don't know how or why that happened.

But if the snap is anywhere else on the board, it is pretty much like driving a car that was in a massive accident, but then repaired.  It will never ride the same, and if the board was snapped towards the middle or the tail, you run the risk of it breaking again under the pressure and weight of your body.  Not to mention that you can hurt yourself really easily.

As for DHD, I have no idea how Darren Handley Designs boards ride.  If you're a beginner, then brands shouldn't really matter.

Make sure the wax is removed before you buy... wax can hide TONS of damage.

There's no reason to pay 200+ for a snapped board.  If there are no dings, I'd be worried as to why the board was snapped.  There's something fishy there.

Find a different place to get a used board.

  2. depends where it broke but usually snapped boards have never been able to perform the same after a repair, if i were you i'd just find another board, check your pawn shops, classifieds or  local surf shops around the beaches always have loads of use boards, but when buying a used board make sure to check for cracks, dings, fractures and extreme yellowing (stay away from those boards) dont really mind pressure dings as pretty much all boards that has been ridden has them unless they are epoxy. If you find a board and theres a sticker on it MAKE SURE to remove that sticker because underneath it could be a surprise like delamination, or a hole they didnt bother fixing.

  3. NOt worth it. I had a board I bought had no saps. I surfed my life out on it then a big wave broke it in half. I got it fixed. They say it will never snap in the same place twice. Well some A*&^ hole ran over me with his short board in a 10+ swell. Needless to say my board was cut in half again in the same place.

So dont waist your $ on a board that is more then 100. YOu need a long board for starters and then move down to short.

Take you time with it too.

Often times you can go on Craigslist.org and get them for free.

  4. Having repaired surfboards for one of the major surf shops, I can tell you that the strength of the board is really compromised once it breaks, especially if it is around the middle of the board.  Also, a lot of weight is added when joining the two halves through the installation of dowells or other material to keep the halves together before glassing.  The additional glassing will also add to the weight.  Even with all this reinforcement, the board is still weaker than its original condition.  Another aspect, which may or may not matter, is that the rocker of the board is slightly modified when you join the halves.  It is really difficult to join the board perfectly, so performance is affected.  Finally, you will run into some difficulty selling the board again if you plan to buy a new board in the future.  My advice is to stay away from repaired broken boards.
