Disadvantages and Advantages of a studio apartment?

I've always wanted a studio apartment. Always seeing them in movies, my mom laughed at me when I said that because apparently they are really cheap. Now what's the name of a studio apartment with like basically 1 room, but a high cieling, with the big windows. Somebody told me those are like only in new york? Is that true? Are they cheap? What's good and what's bad about them.

What you see in the movies are not what is generally called a "Studio Apartment." When you're looking at ads, a studio apt. (aka efficiency) is a less-expensive apartment with only one or two rooms and a bathroom. They are usually very small and require you to combine your bedroom and living room. If you need a place to sleep, they are fine. If you want to hang out with friends and have people spend the night, it may not be for you.

That large New York-style you mentioned is called a Loft apartment.
