Disappointed Mark Selby hopes to win another title in ongoing season: 2012 Welsh Open
England’s Mark Selby tumbled down in the final clash of the 2012 Welsh Open by the score line of 6-9 against China’s Ding Junhui at the Newport Centre.
The Leicester potter was hoping for a title victory when he entered the arena on the final day after beating compatriot Ronnie O’Sullivan. The Jester from Leicester played convincingly in the final match but was not able to win the title and lost to the
Chinese.
Selby’s performance in the current season has been impressive from the very start including the fact that he has clinched two major events so far, the 2011 Wuxi Classic beating Ding Junhui by 9-7 and the 2011 Shanghai Masters beating the Welshman, Mark Williams
by 10-9. After that, he claimed a couple of minor titles in his season campaign.
He began his run in the 2012 Welsh Open after ousting Sam Baird by 4-3 in the first round. He continued his dominance in the tournament defeating Martin Gould 4-1 in Round 2, Stephen Maguire 5-3 in the quarter-final and Ronnie O’Sullivan 6-2 in the semis.
His encounter with Junhui was indeed a stunner as both potters went neck and neck early in the match.
However, the 28-year-old slipped two frames down during the final session and lost the match 9-6. Despite his defeat in the final, Selby is still hopeful to win another ranking event next time.
In his post match interview with the World Snooker, Selby said, “The frame I lost to go 2-2 rather than 3-1 up was probably the turning point, even if it didn't seem like it at the time. I had my fair share of chances in the match and you can't afford to
miss them against a player of Ding's class.”
The former World Snooker Championship finalist added, “I never give up until the last ball is potted and if I could have got to 8-7 I would have been right in it, but every credit to Ding for how well he played. I'm taking the positives out of the week because
I've turned my form around and with more hard work hopefully I can win another title this season.”
The Englishman will be heading to Haiku, China to take part in the 2012 Haiku World Open starting from February 27.
