Disappointment for
Green Comm Racing on Day 1 of America’s Cup World Series
It was all dark and gloomy for Green Comm Racing on Day 1 of America’s Cup World Series as the team finished last in the standings. The wind was ideal for a smooth sail and one team which
felt at home on Plymouth waters was Emirates Team New Zealand, who grabbed two race victories to finish on top of the standings with 28 points.
Green Comm Racing just had a two-day training at Plymouth after a month’s break so the team didn’t take any risks and preferred a slow start so that the crew could warm up and get used
to the conditions prevailing at the race site. They took a seventh place in the first, eighth in the second and ninth in the third race to drop down to the last spot in the standings with 10 points overall.
While speaking to the local media after the end of Day 1, Green Comm Racing helmsman Vasilij Zbogar said, “Before docking out this morning we agreed that our goal today was just to sail
safe but when all went smooth in the first race we decided to push more in the second and third race. We had a great start in the second race and kept the second place until the bottom mark but then, unfortunately, slipped back.”
He further added, “We still have to work a lot on our maneuvers because in the tacks and gybes we give up some places. However, at the end of the day we are happy with what we achieved,
it was only our 11th day on the water. We still have a lot to learn but still it is a much better first day than our first day in Cascais.”
The overall standings at the end of Day 1 are given below.
