Question:

Disc Brake Bicycle Setup?

I've been considering putting a front disc brake on my cyclocross frame with a v brake in the rear, but I don't know anything about disc brakes.

I understand that I need a fork with disc brake mounts, but do I need a special hub as well? Would I need to build a brand new wheel, or is their some type of add on I can put on the hub if I need it?

  1. Yes, you need a specific hub on which to mount the disc... there are no adapters to make a non disc hub to fit with a disc.

Very important though... there are "6 bolt" discs which use- you guessed it- 6 bolts to hold the disc to the hub, and "Centerlock" discs which use a lockring to hold the disc to the hub. These are not interchangable. When lookoing at brakes make sure you get the correct hub/disc combination.

  2. Need a hub that has mounts for the rotors.  Chances our your hub doesnt have it.  You could get a hub with a mount for the rotor and change that out.  You will probaly have to take it in to a bike shop to change out the hub.  It might be cheaper to just buy a new rim with hub that is disc brake compatible.
