My bf tore his Achilles in Basic training. When can I expect him back? They're talking about surgery. Who will cover it? I don't think that the Army will since he's only been in since July 9th.

  1. If the Army broke it then they have to fix it.

If someone is injured in the line of duty the military is obligated to fix the injury. It doesn't matter how long you've been in. Once you step foot in boot camp you are active duty.

He just won't be able to get all the other VA benefits like GI Bill and VA loans if he doesn't complete his training.

There still maybe a way he can go through his surgery and treatments and then go back to boot camp. I don't know all that would work, but I have heard of people going back to training after being injured.

Boot camp is tough and people do get injured during training. That is not the goal of training but it does happen. The military has to help the people who are injured. If he isn't taken care of in the Army then he will be taken care of by the VA. (Veterans Administration)

  2. I was in Army basic training back in 2000 and i was discharged as well as took about month before I came home. If the injury occured while he was there the Army should covered it. It all depends on how quick they what to relases him to home.  I was discharged back in early may of that year did not come home until june 26, 2000.

  3. Here's the deal:  If he tore his Achilles tendon in basic training, that injury was sustained in the line of duty.  By law, the Army must either (a) have Army doctors fix him up, or (b) cover all costs for civilian doctors to fix him up.  If they're talking surgery, the Army will probably do it.  That means it's going to be a while before your boyfriend comes back -- they have to do the surgery and do follow-ups, to include physical therapy, before they can release him.  I'm guessing he'll have three to six months of physical therapy and follow-ups after surgery before they can release him.  Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if the Army handles this one it could be a very long time before your boyfriend comes home.  But don't worry about the bill -- one way or another, the Army will have to pick up the tab on this one.

  4. The army is going to have to repair him and when he is repaired they are going to see if he is fit for duty. If he shows that he really wants to stay and will do whatever it takes they will try to re-class him into another MOS if it's open. It's going to take several months for him to get out of the army or to even be rehabilitated. If he is not fit for the army he will get a disability check for the rest of his life as a result of his injury. They are going to try  everything they can to get him right by giving him the best care possible courtesy of the US Gov.
