port side is left side when it comes to boating and starboard is the right side please help me i think im right and this other newfie says im wrong

You are correct.

If you are on the boat, facing toward the bow (the front pointy end), the port side is the left side. Starboard is the right side.

I learned it this way in Sea Scouts:

Port and Left both have four letters. Port wine is red, so the portside light is red too.

That leaves the other side to be starboard with a green light.
