Discus throwers steal show at the Czech National Championships – Athletics news
As the event concluded at Brno, the second largest city of the Czech Republic, the Czech National Championships observed the discus throwers stealing the show with their astonishing performances at the Pod Palackého vrchem stadium.
Saturday, the first day of the event, unfolded according to the expectations of the spectators as the Discus throwers who, in an attempt to outdo each other, were producing some world-class results on the field. They were displaying the strength of a formidable
field that had been selected for the commencement of the traditional prestigious athletics event.
As the event kicked-off, an entertaining performance was put forward by Vera Cechlova, the 32-year old Czech athlete, who specialises in discus throw and shot put. She hit 63.04m and marked her dominance on the ground.
The performance laid by Cechlova was the beginning of an entertaining battle, where Jan Marcell was the next to leave his spectators cheering with joy. Marcell, the silver medal winner at the 2007 European U23 championships, who boasts of a personal best
of 64.83m in the discipline, outdid his earlier PB as his throw landed at the 65.71m mark.
Just like the discus throw, performances of athletes in the Hammer throw were also commendable, where women throwers dominated the show with Katerina Šafránková hitting the 66.55 mark.
In the sprint competition, though, marred by the challenging wind, the much admired runners could not produce entertaining results, yet they managed to restore the thrill of their spectators by not lagging far behind the traditional finishing times. In the
100m competition, it was veteran runner, Katerina Cechova, who bagged the title for stopping the clock in 11.35 seconds, while the Men’s title was claimed by Pavel Maslak who finished the race in a stunning 10.22 seconds’ time.
The second day of the event was expected to have its traditional thrill and excitement, but amid heavy rain and a low temperature, the sizzle of the tournament went a bit low. Despite the weather , the performance laid by heptathlon specialist, Denisa Rosolova,
who had finished third in the 100m run, successfully managed to defend her title in the 200m competition for finishing of the race in 23.42 seconds. Katerina Cechova, who clocked 23.60 seconds, finished second on the podium. On the Men’s side, the title was
claimed by Vojtech Sulc for a remarkable finish of 21.19 seconds.
