  1. Independent assortment gives you just by chance to have different offspring than the parents. Why because the chromosomes align randomly and hence any combination can be produced thus changing the phenotype in the parents.

    Crossing over in meiosis I causes the chromosomes to cross over hence taking a part of the other chromosome thus creating diversity, meaning if you had chromosome A and B the two would basically take a piece of one another and u would be left with 2 AB hybrids basically.
